MADRID.- El poeta chileno Nicanor Parra fue galardonado con el Premio Cervantes 2011, considerado el galardón más importante de las letras hispanas y que concede el Ministerio de Cultura español al conjunto de la obra de un autor.El fallo de este premio fue hecho público por la ministra de Cultura, Angeles González-Sinde, quien explicó que la decisión del jurado se produjo por mayoría tras ocho votaciones.
Nicanor Parra, nacido en 1914 en San Fabián de Alico, Chile, es poeta y académico, además de matemático y físico, y está considerado como uno de los grandes "antisistema" del universo poético.
El galardón cumplió así con una tradición por la cual es entregado alternativamente a escritores españoles y latinoamericanos. En 2010 recompensó a la escritora española Ana María Matute, que este año no pudo por cuestiones de salud formar parte del jurado que seleccionó el nombre de Parra, uno de los grandes favoritos de esta edición.
El premio está dotado con 125.000 euros (166.850 dólares) y fue creado en 1975 por el Ministerio de Cultura para reconocer la figura de un escritor que, con el conjunto de su obra, haya contribuido a enriquecer el legado literario hispano a uno y otro lado del Atlántico.
Cada año, los reyes Juan Carlos y Sofía entregan el premio en una ceremonia en Alcalá de Henares, Madrid, el 23 de abril, aniversario de la muerte de Cervantes.
